icon UNAM PhD Students Discuss Global Challenges with Nobel Laureates

Global Challenges: Opportunities for Nanotechnology, an international nanotechnology workshop organized by the Center for Nanoscience in Munich, the Swiss Nanoscience Institute and ETH Zurich, was recently held on the island of Sen Servolo in Italy. Bilkent was represented at this prestigious event by Tural Khudiyev and Hakan Ceylan, graduate students currently conducting their research under the instruction of Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Bayındır, Asst. Prof. Ayşe Begüm Tekinay and Asst. Prof. Mustafa Özgür Güler in UNAM. Among the highlights of the workshop were roundtable discussions with eminent researchers, including Nobel laureates, who pioneered in several important fields. [ Bilkent News ]

icon Silicon Nanocrystal Photodetectors Highlighted in Nature Photonics

Okyay and Ortac research groups at UNAM have been collaborating on realizing ultra-low cost optoelectronic devices using nanoparticles. In a collaboration work, researchers from both groups demonstrated a photodetector based on silicon nanocrystals synthesized using laser ablation technique. This innovative approach can produce 20–150-nm-sized silicon nanocrystals using laser ablation, which is potentially a low-cost and high-throughput method. This work is now highlighted in Nature Photonics. Silicon nanocrystals made in this manner could be useful for creating a variety of other optoelectronic devices, such as flexible and disposable sensors or cost-effective solar cells.

icon Three Researchers Joined UNAM

Engin Durgun has been appointed Assistant Professor at UNAM. He received his Ph.D degree in Department of Physics from Bilkent University in 2007. He worked as a post-doctoral fellow in the Physics Department of University of Liege and as a postdoctoral associate in Materials Science Department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Durgun is working in the multidisciplinary field of computational science, which intersects physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering. (See his CV)

Mehmet Z. Baykara has joined Bilkent University as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and UNAM. He got his PhD from Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Yale University in 2012. Dr. Baykara's scientific interests focus on the structure of surfaces, as well as their physical, chemical, and mechanical properties on the nanometer scale and down to the level of single atoms. Dr Elbuken received his Ph.D degree in Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Eng. from University of Waterloo in 2008. He worked as a post-doctoral fellow at Waterloo Microfluidics Laboratory, as a senior R&D engineer at Abbott Laboratories and as a research assistant professor at Koc University. Dr. Elbuken's field of research spans microfluidics, lab-on-a-chip systems and point-of-care diagnostics. [ See his CV ]

icon Prestigious ERC Grant Awarded to UNAM Reseacher

Professor Mehmet BAYINDIR, asistant director of UNAM, has been awarded ERC Starting Grant which was created to encourage “pioneering frontier research in any field of science, engineering and scholarship.” The ERC grant of € 1.5 million is for five years. Dr. Bayindir’s proposal focuses on the development of a new fabrication technique in nanotechnology (see Bayindir Group website).

icon New technique simplifies nanomechanical characterization

MSNUNAM researchers have demonstrated a simple method for obtaining high-resolution mechanical maps. The technique applies the widely available double-pass scheme of the force-microscope to force-distance measurements, and can be applied using standard cantilevers. Non-resonant measurements used in this scheme inherently reject ambiguities and complications that may arise due to coupling of elasticity information with dissipation or adhesion information. icon Assist. Prof. Mustafa Ö. Güler received TÜBA the young scientists award

MSNThe Turkish Academy Of Sciences (TÜBA) The Young Scientists Award (GEBiP) was launched in 2001. This award programme is one of the first of its kind in the world. The objective of TÜBA-GEBIP is to foster young, outstanding scientists who are at the stage of establishing their own research programmes in Turkey after finishing their post-doctoral research activities. TÜBA supports these scientists for a period of three years and helps them set up their own research groups at a stage when they are in need for incentives. In this way TÜBA tries to contribute to develop a new generation of competent researchers from all disciplines, including social sciences and humanities, basic sciences and health sciences. icon UNAM scientists devise a digital photonic nose for machine olfaction

MSNResearchers at UNAM developed an infrared absorption based photonic nose that uses photonic bandgap fibers to differentiate and assign unique binary codes to odorous molecules, opening a new path for photonic based olfactory sensors. Machine olfaction research aspires to mimic the exquisite sense of smell in mammals, using arrays of cross responsive sensors backed with sophisticated pattern recognition algorithms for the differentiation of thousands of complex odors. Each odorant, with its particular shape, size, functional group and charge combination, induces a unique combinatorial response from a library. (Read the rest of this entry)
