Rapid developments in information and communication technologies in the final quarter of the 20th century have
triggered the rise of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology involves new techniques and methods of synthesizing nano-structures
with outstanding properties and developing products with new functionalities from these new materials.
Today, many countries are making significant investments in nanotechnology through academic and industrial channels. The
idea of establishing a center of excellence in nanoscience and nanotechnology in Turkey has been embraced by the State Planning
Organization ("Devlet Planlama Teskilatı", DPT) and as a result "the National Nanotechnology Research Center (NNRC) " project
prepared by researchers from Bilkent University has commenced. This is a multi-disciplinary effort led by faculty from
the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, and the Department of Electrical
Engineering. Some of the faculty are already active in nanoscience and have contributed to the development nanotechnology
programs in Europe. The Center will be open to the participation of all scientists within Turkey through research and
development projects. Calls for proposals will be announced periodically and projects supported through these calls will utilize
the resources of the Center. International participation in these projects is encouraged. The goals of the Center are not
limited to research and development, but include the education and training of students in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
In the first phase, R&D efforts will focus on the following areas: fiber, nanophotonic, nanoelectronic and spintronic devices,
surface and surface related methods, nano-textiles, ultrafast lasers, ultrafast spectroscopy, nanomaterials, nanodetectors,
nanostructured thin films and surface phenomena,and devices of nanometer scale. The expectation is that many of the technologies and know-how generated at this Center can find industrial applications and
be commercialized through start-up companies established by some of the graduating students. |

| World`s Smallest Flag of Turkey |
| Assoc. Prof. Ahmet Oral`s research group of the Department of Physics at Bilkent University
and the National Nanotechnology Research Center has produced the world`s smallest Turkish flag using
nanolithography. The lines on the flag are 100 nm-thick (about 50 thousandth of human hair) and 2

High-capacity fuel cells: Hydrogen storage in nanostructures |
| Rapidly increasing consumption of fossil fuels is among the world`s leading problems. It is ancitipated that known resources will be depleted within 50 years, unless an alternative energy source is developed. Prof. Salim Ciraci (Bilkent Uni) and Dr. Taner Yıldırım NIST, USA) have shown that large quantities of hydrogen can be stored in nanostructures, raising prospects of the hydrogen developing as an energy source. Wearable opto-electronic and thermal sensors |
| Asst. Prof. Bayindir of the Department of Physics and his colleagues at MIT have developed a new technique for the synthesis of kilometers-long fiber-based
light and temperature sensors, which can be weaved into textiles and be used in the design of intelligent textiles. In addition, these sensors can be utilized on large surface-area space shuttles and as artificial skin for robotic systems.
